Welcome to Episode 1 of the podcast “Bridge the Gap”
Welcome to Episode 1 of the podcast “Bridge the Gap” – produced by the Cape & Islands Bridges Coalition and co-hosted by Matt Pitta, the Director of Communication with The Davenport Companies and Paul Niedzwiecki – the CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and the leader of the CIBC.
We’re making this podcast the authoritative place for people to get the latest information on the upcoming project to replace the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges over the Cape Cod Canal
In early 2024 -- more than 35 business and community leaders from Cape Cod, the Islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, and Southeastern Massachusetts convened for the first meeting of the CIBC. The group’s objective -- advocate for full funding and replacement of both bridges, while safeguarding economic viability and community needs for the Cape and Islands.
Together, the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges function as a critical transportation system, providing the only vehicle access points for 230,000 year-round residents, more than 8,500 businesses, and 5 million annual visitors. Both bridges are approaching the end of their serviceable lifespan and are considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient.
If not replaced, the bridges will soon require major rehabilitation work, leading to months-long lane restrictions and bridge closures. A complete closure of either bridge would result in an unprecedented disruption to the regional economy.
Joining the inaugural episode is Luisa Paiewonsky executive director of the state’s Megaprojects Delivery Office – which oversees public works so big—each has a price tag of $500 million and up – and the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges are both in that realm…
“Bridge the Gap” is the go-to source for the latest updates on the bridge project – no hype – just the facts about a transportation infrastructure project that is the biggest issue facing Cape Cod’s future…
